In industrial environments, poorly designed lighting can generate operational errors, risks to people, and technical failures, especially in explosive atmospheres.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"901\">In this article, we explain what light pollution is, how it impacts ATEX environments, and what you can do to reduce it.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"908\" data-end=\"943\">\u00a0WHAT IS LIGHT POLLUTION? \ud83d\udca1<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"945\" data-end=\"1087\">Light pollution is the alteration of natural darkness caused by excessive, misdirected, or unnecessary artificial lighting. It manifests as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1316\">\n<li data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1151\">\n<p data-start=\"1091\" data-end=\"1151\"><strong data-start=\"1091\" data-end=\"1110\">Light intrusion<\/strong>: lighting that invades undesired areas<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1152\" data-end=\"1209\">\n<p data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1209\"><strong data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1163\">Glare<\/strong>: reduces visibility and contrast perception<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1268\">\n<p data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1268\"><strong data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1233\">Over-illumination<\/strong>: applying more light than needed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1269\" data-end=\"1316\">\n<p data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1316\"><strong data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1282\">Skyglow<\/strong>: the well-known luminous \u201chalo\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1318\" data-end=\"1471\">In industrial plants, especially outdoors, poor distribution and orientation of light sources can affect both the environment and technical operations.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1527\">\u26a0\ufe0f HOW DOES IT AFFECT AN ATEX INSTALLATION?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1529\" data-end=\"1724\">Although often overlooked, light pollution can have real consequences in industrial environments classified as explosion risk, both operationally and from a human and environmental perspective.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"3188\">\n<li data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"2012\">\n<p data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"2012\"><strong data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1765\">It compromises operational safety<\/strong><br data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1768\" \/>Poorly oriented lighting points can create harsh shadows or glare, making it difficult to read signs or see equipment. In facilities with ESG commitments or near protected areas\u2014whether for environmental reasons or dark sky preservation\u2014this factor may weigh heavily in HQSE audits.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2998\" data-end=\"3188\">\n<p data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3188\"><strong data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3030\">It represents energy waste<\/strong><br data-start=\"3030\" data-end=\"3033\" \/>Uncontrolled over-illumination increases electricity consumption unnecessarily and limits access to incentives such as Energy Saving Certificates (ESCs).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"3195\" data-end=\"3237\">\ud83d\udcdc AND WHAT DOES THE REGULATION SAY?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3239\" data-end=\"3359\">Although there is not yet a specific regulation on light pollution in ATEX, there are relevant references to consider:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3361\" data-end=\"3773\">\n<li data-start=\"3361\" data-end=\"3487\">\n<p data-start=\"3363\" data-end=\"3487\"><strong data-start=\"3363\" data-end=\"3381\">UNE-EN 12464-2<\/strong>: defines lighting levels by activity, minimum uniformity, and light distribution in outdoor workplaces.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3488\" data-end=\"3588\">\n<p data-start=\"3490\" data-end=\"3588\"><strong data-start=\"3490\" data-end=\"3504\">IDAE Guide<\/strong>: establishes criteria on orientation, efficiency, and control of intrusive light.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3589\" data-end=\"3773\">\n<p data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3773\"><strong data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3615\">Regional regulations<\/strong> (such as in Catalonia or Navarre): impose emission limits to the sky, considering the upward emission of a luminaire in relation to its installed position.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3775\" data-end=\"3878\">In the ATEX framework, even though light pollution is not explicitly mentioned, requirements include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3880\" data-end=\"4043\">\n<li data-start=\"3880\" data-end=\"3932\">\n<p data-start=\"3882\" data-end=\"3932\">Avoiding conditions that generate indirect risks<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3933\" data-end=\"3983\">\n<p data-start=\"3935\" data-end=\"3983\">Ensuring safe and well-controlled environments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3984\" data-end=\"4043\">\n<p data-start=\"3986\" data-end=\"4043\">Using certified equipment suitable for the type of zone<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4045\" data-end=\"4156\">Therefore, poor lighting that induces errors or affects perception falls within the scope of risk prevention.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4163\" data-end=\"4234\">\ud83d\udd0d HOW TO REDUCE LIGHT POLLUTION IN ATEX INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4236\" data-end=\"4370\">Reducing light pollution is not only feasible but also a sign of technical quality, energy efficiency, and environmental commitment.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4372\" data-end=\"5307\">\n<li data-start=\"4372\" data-end=\"4570\">\n<p data-start=\"4374\" data-end=\"4570\"><strong data-start=\"4374\" data-end=\"4419\">Choose luminaires with suitable diffusers<\/strong><br data-start=\"4419\" data-end=\"4422\" \/>Avoid luminaires that emit without control.
