Its development is accelerated by its role in the future integration of renewables, the production of synthetic\u00a0fuels,\u00a0and the reduction of emissions in energy-intensive sectors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In Spain, this progress is already taking shape through large-scale investments and projects, increasing the need to design facilities with ATEX criteria from the outset. In this context, lighting becomes a technical safety element rather than a secondary decision.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hydrogen belongs to\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Group IIC<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the most demanding level within the ATEX classification, due to its low\u00a0ignition of\u00a0energy and particularly volatile behavior. This combination means that even small leaks can result in an explosive atmosphere if the installation is not\u00a0properly designed. In this context, every design decision matters and must meet the same level of technical and operational requirements.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Why hydrogen plants are so demanding<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Talking about <strong>Group IIC<\/strong> means talking about the most severe ATEX environment for gases. This category includes substances such as acetylene, as well as hydrogen, which require equipment specifically designed to prevent a spark, a hot\u00a0surface\u00a0or an insulation failure from becoming a source of ignition. This is critical because the gases included in this group have\u00a0very low\u00a0minimum\u00a0ignition energies, very wide explosive concentration ranges and auto-ignition temperatures ranging from 90\u00b0C for carbon\u00a0disulphide\u00a0to 560\u00b0C for hydrogen, with acetylene at 305\u00b0C.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">All this information relating to each installation makes it necessary to precisely control the surface temperature of any equipment installed. In practice, this directly affects the luminaire, but also junction boxes, cable\u00a0glands,\u00a0and accessories. A product suitable for other gases is not always suitable for hydrogen, even if it carries ATEX marking.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In addition to its auto-ignition temperature and extreme volatility, it should also be taken into account that hydrogen is extremely difficult to \u201ccontain\u201d in tanks and that leaks, however minimal, are always present.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How ATEX zoning is applied<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zoning defines where an explosive atmosphere may appear and how\u00a0frequently.\u00a0In simple terms,\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zone 0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0is where the presence of gas is continuous or very prolonged;\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zone 1<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, where it may occur under normal operating conditions; and\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zone 2<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, where it would only occur occasionally or under abnormal conditions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In a hydrogen plant,\u00a0electrolysers, compressors, storage\u00a0areas,\u00a0and transfer points do not behave in the same way from an ATEX perspective. This means the luminaire must be adapted to the specific area: lighting an outdoor perimeter is\u00a0not the same as\u00a0lighting a technical area close to a potential leak point. Choosing the right zone is just as important as choosing the right equipment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What a luminaire for hydrogen must\u00a0comply with<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A luminaire suitable for hydrogen must be certified for\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">IIC<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, not just for a generic ATEX category. It must also incorporate a temperature class consistent with the gas auto-ignition temperature and with the safety margin\u00a0required\u00a0in the project.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The protection concept also\u00a0matters:\u00a0solutions such as<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Ex\u00a0db, Ex\u00a0eb\u00a0or Ex\u00a0ec<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0may be suitable depending on the zone and the design of the installation. This is in addition to the degree of protection against dust, moisture and washing, where<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0IP66<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0is usually a solid benchmark in industry and, for example, mandatory for Ex db. Installing a luminaire outside specification not only adds operational risk; it also compromises the plant\u2019s legal compliance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Mistakes to avoid<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Aptos\" data-listid=\"4\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Confusing IIA or IIB with IIC. Equipment suitable for gases is not automatically suitable for hydrogen<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Aptos\" data-listid=\"4\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Choosing an insufficient temperature class. If the surface temperature does not leave a safety margin, the risk increases unnecessarily<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Aptos\" data-listid=\"4\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Use \u201cATEX\u201d luminaires without checking the full marking. The certification must clearly\u00a0indicate\u00a0its suitability for hydrogen (IIB + H2 or IIC)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Aptos\" data-listid=\"4\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ignoring the reality of\u00a0outdoors\u00a0areas.
